review 1: Once Upon a Northern Night by Jean E. Pendziwol, begins with a first person narrative. The narrator tells the reader that one northern night while they lay fast asleep, the narrator painted a picture for you. The black and white illustrations portray a snowy forest, with bushes and trees all made from sketches with no colors. The narration continue as it is revealed to the reader that it all started with one tiny snowflake, and describes its beauty. The lack of colors is made up by the thought and heavy description that is implied by the text. The snow flake was special in its own, and falls down the pace through a pastel chalk meadow. An own flies down, down without a sound, and two snow rabbits leap from page to page. The illustration that the narrator depicts through po... moreetic language comes to life in the readers mind as well as on the actual spreads of the picture book. The reoccurring symbol of the snow represents the tranquility and the gift of beauty to the reader. The beauty of the words bring a lullaby type mood to the story, which would work well as a night time story for young children to have read aloud to them. The simple poetic techniques would be used well to show how poems sound and look in a classroom.
review 2: Text reads like a poem - refrain of "Once upon a northern night"Illustrations mostly black and white with splashes of color; different on different pages -- green bristles of pine, red apples that deer nibble on, yellow eyes of the owl, auburn of the fox (which seems so recognizably Arsenault). Illustrations done in mixed media (pencil, gouache, watercolor & ink) and assembled digitally.Definite sense of place - Canadian author & illustrator less
