The Penderwicks
review 1: The third Penderwicks book does not disappoint. After the events of the last book, the family spends some time apart, Mr Penderwicks goes to England, and Rosalind, who he worried had taken too much responsibility too young, goes to NJ with her friend Anna. That leaves Skye, Jane, Batty and Hound to go to a rented cottage in Maine with Aunt Claire. They are reunited with their friend Jeffrey of Arundel, and meet summer neighbor Alec and his friend Turron. Jane also develops a crush on Dominic and Batty befriends Dominic's sister Mercedes. There are moose, golfers, bonfires on the beach, a rock bashed into a nose and the usual troubles that follow the family. What's great about this book are the themes. Jane is investigating the nature of love for a Sabrina Starr book and Ba... moretty discovers a love of music. More importantly, Skye is the OAP -- Oldest Available Penderwick -- responsible for all the kids, and with Claire turning her ankle, there is a lot of responsibility. When we first met Rosalind, she was unusually responsible; Skye is thrust into her position cold, although she has Rosalind's example to follow. As usual, there are tears and laughs in the book. Highly recommended for ten year old girls like my daughter (my son finds them boring).
review 2: The third Penderwick novel is very good, but not nearly as good as the first two books in the series. I enjoyed many of the plot arcs in the book (including the golf sale, Skye's OAP dilemma, Batty's concert, etc.), but Jane's crush on Dominick really annoyed me. Also, when (spoiler alert) Jeffrey found his father, it was really touching, but also too emotional, in my humble opinion. But it was still an enjoyable read, and I recommend it to girls and most boys ages 10 and up, especially if they are fans of the series. less

I hated the romance. It was a fun adventure story, though.
