review 1: A hugely enjoyable, entertaining read for any fan of historical fiction, but particularly for people who love anything related to the Italian Renaissance. I'm a huge fan of Jeanne Kalogridis - she always brings 14th/15th century Italy to life in her novels with her brilliant, immersive, engaging writing style. The main focus of the story is on Caterina Sforza, an Italian noblewoman known as "The Tigress of Forli" who was famous in Renaissance Italy who "distinguished herself by her bold and impetuous actions taken to safeguard her possessions from possible usurpers, and to defend her dominions from attack, when they were involved in political intrigues that were a distinguishing feature of 15th century Italy" (source: Wikipedia). I love reading stories about strong women i... moren history, and Caterina Sforza is one pretty remarkable lady when you consider she lived in a time when women were, in general, seen as "the weaker sex". "The Scarlet Contessa' is told from the point of view of Dea, Caterina's (fictional) lady-in-waiting who is another strong female, and I'd say a more likeable character than Caterina. Not only does Dea have to cope with Caterina's political and personal problems, she has a few of her own to deal with too. Although this is a largely fictionalised interpretation of her life, it still made for great reading.
