review 1: Charles Unwin is a clerk in the detective agency. Until one day, he is not. He is promoted to detective, with no reason or meaning. This is the story of how he copes. I picked up this book on a whim, and that whim was totally justified. This book has the dreamy unreal quality of "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" and "The Night Circus", but there is not really any magic, per say. Just a twist that puts our world into another dimension of possibility.
review 2: This is one of the best pieces of speculative fiction I have read in years. It's not a perfect book by any means, but the author manages to evoke all the qualities of a strange dream and tell a coherent but otherworldly story. Would recommend to anyone looking for something off the beaten path in the wa... morey of sense imagery. Plot is solid but not astounding. Go enjoy the journey and be sad to wake up when it's over. less
