review 1: Volume 3 shows better art than the previous volumes but it seems like the story is starting to stretch itself a little thin. Connections between certain characters are starting to come out of nowhere in an effort to beef up the story but I'm just not sure it's necessary for what Lemire already had going. If he wanted to include certain "shocks" at the end of this volume I think he should've let another four issues take care of it. Trying not to spoil anything: he makes it all move too fast when some of these revelations should've come through details maturing throughout the story. However, this doesn't apply to the first half of this book, which is wonderful. But by the end I had rolled my eyes a couple of times at Jeppard's never-ending one liners that just don't sit well... more with me.
review 2: This follows on from the second volume where gus has been handed over to the militia and thrown into captivity with a number of other hybrid children just like himself. As he befriends them we find Jepperd struggling with his guilt in handing Gus over. We also find out a little more about the origins of the plague and the hybrids and more importantly about the origins of Gus himself. Once again I struggled with actually connecting with any of the characters which leaves the story a little muted as I care little about what happens to each or about their inner struggles. But the story isn't bad and the illustrations are beginning to grow on me so we're making progress. less
