review 1: Since Rotworld, this series has reached a plateau. The horror element of this series still remains strong, and the artwork is consistently grotesque. But the world-building is a little weaker in this volume. It's cool to see Buddy Baker's actor side, but everything that is happening with Maxine in the Red is a little forced and boring... I just don't find that side of the story to be very interesting. 3.5/5
review 2: Every time I think Animal Man will peter out Jeff Lemire reignites the story of Buddy Baker with new threats to his family and the Red. This time the villains are the Splinterfolk who graft animal parts to themselves to join the Red...weird but Lemire sells it well by adding some other sinister figures into the mix. One thing I always felt was... more strange with this series is that Buddy is an actor as well as a super hero and has to deal with the media constantly coming after him and I never feel like the story is hampered by this inclusion.The other neat thing that Lemire does is keep the story continual - we never have a full resolution of a story line each one leads into the next which makes it unique and sometimes a little frustrating when you reach the end especially with this collection. The art is excellent by Steve Pugh who captures Buddy's emotions with every panel and the intricate details of the Red making Animal Man one of my favourite comics. Rafael Albuqurque draws issues 24 and 25 and does an amazing job of it especially since his work on American Vampire sometimes wavers. less
