review 1: The second volume of this slightly, but wonderfully strange series is every bit as intriguing, visceral, and beautiful as the first. Our protagonist Gus (the young hybrid deer/human boy) has been taken to The Preserve by the mysterious fellow known as Jeppard. Will it be the safe haven he thought it would? Or something far more sinister? Jeff Lemire does a great job of wrapping up some things left hanging from the first volume, while still giving us a comic that most fans of the genre should be salivating over until they get the next issue in their grubby little mitts. I couldn't help but notice that comic writer Jason Aaron wrote a blurb on the cover of one of the issues saying that he'd crawl over broken glass to read this comic. I can certainly see why. My utmost recomm... moreendation. *- I read this book as digitally downloaded single issues of Sweet Tooth #'s 6-11
review 2: Following directly on from the previous volume, here we find Gus being held by some not so savoury characters as they try and find out more about his past in order to understand the disease that has wiped out many. We also get to find out more about Jeppard and his history with some insight into why he has become what he has, as well as discovering how he knew about the compound and its work. Again I wasn't overly enamored by the story and I still can't figure out if I like the illustrations or not (as good and detailed as they are). I think the trouble is, I haven't really connected with any of the characters yet so I'm not that concerned about what happens to them but I feel this is a series worth persevering with as it has such huge potential. less
