review 1: Beginning right after the end of Dexter in the Dark, Dexter by Design is an art-centric story. Dexter and Rita's honeymoon in Paris, during which they see artworks, foreshadows the modus operandi of the antagonist, who puts corpses on display, decorated as if they are works of art. Dexter feels guilty when he kills the wrong person and reflects on the events that led to his foster father Harry designing him as he is.The events of Darkly Dreaming Dexter are mentioned briefly; Dexter's brother Brian is finally mentioned again, and I am surprised that Dexter does not use his look-alike brother as a cover-up when Detective Coulter sees a video of Dexter killing someone, one of a few videos posted by the antagonist on YouTube. After two years, Deborah finally tells Dexter that ... moreshe does not approve of Dexter killing people. After getting stabbed and going into a coma, however, she changes her mind, saying that she no longer wants to be a cop and that Harry was right about what Dexter needs to do.The artist is very good at stalking Dexter, and there is a lot of suspense when Rita's life is on the line. After she is saved, the novel ends on the amusing revelation that she is pregnant, which makes me eager to read the next book. Speaking of amusing lines, I could not help but laugh when Astor and Dexter had the following exchange that makes me wonder about Jeff Lindsay's opinion of the Showtime TV series: “'How come you're never on TV, Dexter?' she said accusingly. 'I don't want to be on TV,' I said."
review 2: I think it is pretty much unanimously agreed that Dexter In The Dark was atrocious. Supernatural doesn't blend well with police/murder novels previously based entirely in reality. BUT NEVER FEAR, we are fully back in reality with Dexter By Design. But still... something felt a little bit off to me.It starts off okay, with a series of art-based murders that somehow end up centering around Dexter. But then it starts to get a bit weird. His training with Astor and Cody just seems bizarre. He seems to be floundering around a lot, not actually doing anything at all with them but still just occasionally dropping in brief exchanges of dialogue. It's as if Jess Lindsay thought that it would be a really cool concept for Dexter's stepkids to have these urges... but then wasn't really sure how to follow up on it. After that, the conclusion to the book also just seemed stilted. Also, is Rita the most naive and gullible human being ever?As for Dexter and Kyle's little jaunt... why? How? Why would Chutsky decide to believe Dexter and go along with him? Because of Deb? I don't really buy it. Speaking of Deb, at first when she was attacked I actually felt something for a character (a first for this series) but then it seemed to fairly quickly turn around and become nothing more than just a motivation for Dexter and Kyle to act these ways. And how many police questionings can Dexter REALLY avoid by simpling mumbling about a concussion and walking away? I am not a police officer, but I feel like they are probably more persistent than that.Overall, this feels like a good enough concept that just seemed to get lost somewhere along the executional way.{{read 29/06/14-19/07/14}} less
