review 1: This is a great novel, and it is perfect for fans of military fantasy. The pace of the novel is rather slow, as the author gives every detail of the narrator's experience. The most exciting parts of the novel for me were definitely the battle scenes, but the entire book exudes a sense of realism that is often hard to find in the fantasy genre. As for tone, I found the novel to be a cross between Joe Abercrombie and Glen Cook's novels. This is definitely a unique dark fantasy, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series as soon as possible.

... moree read in the past few months (see my review of Blake Hausladen's Native Silver) and, as with that book, I enjoyed the reading immensely. Differently structured than many fantasies with a narrator who learns what is going on as the story unfolds rather than having a known quest, Scourge of the Betrayer begins with a mystery and, while following a convoluted path of politics, small, bloody battles and treachery, unfolds in a very compelling way. Salyard creates characters and a milieu that intrigues and while the ending leaves questions unanswered the effect of this is anticipation for the just released second book of the planned trilogy. The next book may just complete the conversion! less

Well-developed characters, engrossing storyline. Looking forward to moving on to book 2!
I found this to be a good character driven dark fantasy novel and a worthy debut.
Slow start, then an incredible end, all leading up to... the next book.
A short, non-epic fantasy, with detailed descriptions of combat.
