review 1: Continuing the timing of reading books around an important date, I have been listening to this audiobook around the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. As with other books by Jeff Shaara, this was an engaging book about final events of the Pacific portion of WWII during the late spring and summer of 1945. The main portions of the story were the Manhattan Project, the Battle of Okinawa and the bombing of Hiroshima. The narrative is presented from the imagined perspective of several real characters (combined with fictional extras) who took part in the events. The book added much to what I know about the conflict and was a nice complement to recently reading 'The Enola Gay'.
review 2: This is the best of Shaara's WWII trilogy; it basically read itself t
... moreo me. This traces the end of the Third Reich, from the Battle of the Bulge to the fall of Berlin. Patton, Eisenhower,Hitler and his various generals and aides come alive with scenes of realistic dialogue based on Shaara's careful research. To my mind, this is a great way to learn history. What really made this read sweet is that my dad, a WWII vet, is reading the trilogy at the same time. This has made for some great conversations and some new war stories I've never heard from him, as well as some new angles on stories I've heard over and over for years. less
