review 1: Just not well written. I've been a veg for many years and I doubt many people will be convinced by this guy's scattered arguments. It's also very apparent that he's pretty well off financially; he frequently uses sections of the book to talk about how one can switch to healthier, organic produce and such (and really, if you're going for an animal rights-based book you should limit or totally can the health spiel), yet he doesn't talk at all about how some people cannot afford that lifestyle no matter how well intentioned they might be. Bottom line, this book could've been a lot better than it was.
review 2: I've realized that I was on a slow path to eliminating meat from my diet, but I had just started reading this book when I decided to try to stop eating meat
... more for the second time in my life (the first being almost 2 years ago, but working in an Italian restaurant at the time made it very difficult and unsuccessful). I have now been going strong for almost 4 weeks. The author is definitely biased, as being a vegan himself, and wants to convince his readers to do the same. But he is never condescending, and he is very smart and did his research well. He supports so much with citations, as they take up a big chunk of the end of the book. I never got bored or frustrated or lost, at least not with the author. But I can no longer think about eating meat without picturing the animal, how it was likely treated, and the impact it had on the environment. Thus, I don't see myself eating meat again any time soon. less
