review 1: Again a gorgeous snapshot of the delightful Mackenzie clan, complete with their soul mates and children. Truly heartwarming this brings them all together for Hart's first Christmas as a married man. Eleanor is heavily pregnant and Hart is scared beyond reason that Eleanor (at the age of 33) will not survive childbirth. Hart's first wife and day old son died under these tragic circumstances and he is finding that Hart Mackenzie, Duke and head of his family cannot control events. There are various 'happenings' during the holiday get together, a missing child, a broken Ming bowl, as well as Eleanor's inevitable labour. This story tells us how far this previously broken family has come. The love and utter support they give unstintingly to each other. Ian again emerges as a stro... moreng, loving man, realising after the breakage of his longed for Ming bowl that nothing compares to the love he has for Beth and his children. Even the dogs of the family are true Mackenzie members! There is another budding love story hinted at which I shall begin forthwith....lucky me, I have found Jennifer Ashley's fabulous Mackenzie family late on and so can hop straight into another. The family, in particular the ladies and Ian, have embraced Lloyd Fellows, the bastard son of the previous Duke, Eleanor has invited Lloyd to his first Mackenzie Christmas and here he meets again the beautiful captivating, Louisa, younger sister to Isabella. They had previously met at another gathering and shared an impromptu, passionate kiss. The attraction between them is sizzling, Louisa the daughter of an Earl (albeit dead, broke and disgraced) is far above a bastard Detective Police Inspector so nothing can come of it...can it? I will read the story of these two, would be, star crossed lovers and report back in my next review! I look forward to how JA brings this about!A lovely epilogue to the first 4 books Ms. Ashley, heartwarming and romantic, I do love a happy ending. Ian Mackenzie is still....to me....the character that binds the family together, taking them from an interesting gorgeous family to an extraordinary, gorgeous family. His apparent Asperger's adding interest and amazing insight, and his overcoming and learning to live with it quite lovely.Yesterday (25 April 2014) there was a debate on BB2 on this exact subject. I stopped my car and listened, simply because I have become so interested after reading this saga. Jennifer Ashley has it spot on, the debate focused on relationships, the understanding etc involved. Truly insightful Jennifer. A round of applause and 5, well deserved stars. This saga is not 'just' another historical romance but a lesson in human nature.
review 2: I really liked this book. It a bit of everyone. Cam is dealing with the reality of Daniel being a grown man and being a father again. Hart is confronting his fear of Eleanor dying in labor. And Beth breaks one of Ian's priceless Ming bowls.I really enjoyed this slice of life. Hart really did come off like a bear. Ian's points of views were interesting. We got bits and pieces of Bellamy, Cam's right hand man, and that he falls for a new servant girl. I wish we could have seen more of Bellamy. I really liked what we did get to see and wanted more. less
