review 1: I always enjoy works of historical fiction that teach me about a landmark moment in history that I knew nothing about. And because of that, I really appreciated Jennifer Bradbury's novel and it's exploration of 1947 partition of India and Pakistan. Bradbury's historical and cultural detail was wonderful and it taught me a lot about a violent and scary time in India's history. The teenage characters were all likeable, smart, and interesting in their own way and the plot seemed plausible. However, I think that this is one of those YA books that will me more appreciated by adults than teens.
review 2: This was a very good YA historical fiction told through the eyes of 3 teens during the tumultuous partition of India in 1947. Anu is a Sikh girl recently attack... moreed in the violence, whose family is desperate to keep her safe. Tariq is a brilliant Muslim who longs to attend Oxford but sees this as impossible since his family is relocating to the new country of Pakistan. Then there is Margaret Darnsley, the golden-haired English girl whose father is one of the consultants to Radcliffe charged with redrawing the new countries' boundaries. She is both intrigued by and contemptuous of India and its peoples. Anu and Tariq become servants in the Darnsley household and try to stay safe within the boundaries of their own personal agendas. As the violence intensifies, they must rely on one another. Very authentic details and voices...one to consider for classroom use! less
