review 1: Almost 4 stars.....A lot of WWII era novels I've read in the last decade are set in the US, England or Europe. This one took me to Japan and detailed some of the horrors of war there. I have many Japanese friends.....so painful but interesting reading. I didn't know that our firebombing of Tokyo one March night in 1945 killed one hundred thousand people and destroyed sixteen square miles of that city. Japanese war atrocities against our military are well documented, but it was the civilian population who became our target as we attempted to inflict a coup de gras upon Japan. This novel tells the story well.

In 2 days, I finished this novel weeping for the t... moreraumas and triumphs Yoshi-chan had endured during the most horrific period in American/Japanese history during WWII. I cannot wait to read the author's first novel, The Painter from Shanghai, and I sent a personal note to Jennifer Cody Epstein with praise for this masterfully written novel. The depth of characters, vivid imagery, and historical precision are breathtaking and the impact of this journey will be memorable for months to come. less
