review 1: This is an interesting book. After reading a few chapters I thought that perhaps this was a book of short stories. Then I realised that a minor character in each chapter was in fact the subject of the following chapter. After a while some of the characters reappear in other chapters usually in a different timeframe and with new characters. By the end of the book you can piece together the stories of a few main players. It's a bit like a jigsaw. Interesting.
review 2: What I liked about this book is that it read as a set of short stories that were all connected, however lightly. The prevailing atmosphere was nostalgic, the writing felt smooth and everything had that dream-like quality. I liked some stories more (Sasha's first) and some less (Kitty-related ones,
... moremostly). I didn't like that some topics were casually thrown and then weren't explored more (post-traumatic experiences and recovery), and some were described to the point of over-explanation. Also, it's hard for me to believe that every one of the characters - even if they all are rock-stars and whatnot - need to obsess over the ugliness of aging and hopefulness of the young. Maybe it's because I don't believe in the "innocence of the young" any more than I believe that you can convey emotions just by mentioning them. All in all, a good book that fell kind of short. less
