review 1: I enjoyed the HBO series Carnivale and this felt like it might evoke the same creepy carnival atmosphere while adding magic and other elements (no pun intended). My reading clearly suffered from being unfamiliar with the Elemental Assassin series, although conversely there were plenty of details included about the large setting that should have helped alleviate my lack of knowledge. But I just felt like I was getting a tiny portion of an actual story, which I suppose is accurate. The plot was too simple with no surprises and it was all over to quickly. I understand it's a short story but other authors manage to pack much more quality into stories just as short. None of the characters interested me. I didn't read the sampler of other stories from the anthology that wa... mores included. so maybe there's some gems elsewhere but I won't be bothering with the full anthology.
review 2: I love the short stories in the Spider series by Jennifer Estep. "Parlor Tricks" features Gin and her sister, Bria in search of a missing teenage girl who went to a big tent carnival. Here we find all sorts of elementals performing various tricks including Esmeralda the beautiful ringmaster. However, this beauty has a secret and it is not Mary Kay. If you want something quick, satisfying, and you love the spider, Parole Trucks is just the read for you! less
