review 1: Daughters....is a beautiful story about a couple who decides to adopt a daughter from China after years of unsuccessful attempts at having a child. That alone was powerful subject matter as the author describes the process, the pain of so many losses, the support of a loving partner, the tentative decision to adopt and finally the trip to China to get their daughter. You learn about the foreign adoptions process and about the children left behind. But this book is much more. Helen is also a wife, a sister and a daughter and we follow the relationship between her and the sister who raised her after her mothers death from cancer and the estranged father who abandoned them during her mother's illness. This aspect of the book is thoughtfully written and you come to care fo... morer the characters and understand their very human struggles. Just as it seems that Helen will be happy, life happens. Her finally perfect world falls apart. A powerful narrative. A very real story about family, loss and resilience. I don't give 5 stars often but when a books makes me wonder "what would I do," its a winner.
review 2: I don't know what caught my eye about this book, causing me to buy it. Whatever it was, it didn't truly capture the essence of this book, as having a clearer picture of the story, I would not have bothered to read it.This started as a (just barely) three star book, but the second half was not as good as the first half. Also, I feel a bit tricked into reading a book with such a distinct Christian undertone. I generally avoid novels that deal with faith, both because as an atheist I find the subject boring, and because it tends to be covered very superficially when in novels, which I find quite irritating. In this case, it seemed like the author wanted to delve into the evolution of her main character's faith, but not enough to actually develop the point. As such, it just felt a bit contrived, as did a lot of the plot in the second half of the book. less

I always enjoy books about families adopting from China. That said, this book was a mixed bag.
