A Midnight Magic Mystery
review 1: I picked this one up spur of the moment because it happened to be new at the library when I needed something new to read. It's a genre bending hybrid of mystery and fantasy, with just a dash of romance and is the first in a series. The main protagonist, Mona,is a high priestess of her local coven of witches in Virginia. She is a single mom (thanks to her sister disapearing and leaving her two kids on her door), a business owner (a spell shop that caters to the tourist, amateur, and serious spell caster), and a community leader. Much of the town is made up of one family with cousins and second cousins galore, and most of the town that doesn't activly practice witchcraft is at least aware of it.Mona has enough on her plate helping to plan the Founder's Day festival when a ... morewerewolf shows up on her door one night bleeding and claiming to be there to help protecter her because someone wants to kill her. Now she has to play detective, which she is not very good at. Her amateurish attempts at interrogating her "suspects" and searching their homes are embarrassing. The love interests are obvious. The whold book feels cookie cutter and template ready for a whole series of cheap, quick read 'em all in a weekend mysteries. Not my bread and butter. In the end I did care about the characters and did finish the book, despite all my complaining about it. It got three stars instead of two because I know alot of people really like this stuff and it just wasn't my cup of tea. However, if you really want to read a hybrid of mystery and fantasy I highly reccomend the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. In fact I think I'll go read one right now.
review 2: I picked this book up on a whim and I have to say that I enjoyed it. It was definitely a fun read, even if the protagonist was extremely annoying. There are a lot of these magical mysteries out there and this novel didn't really anything new to the genre, but it gave me enough to keep me going so I have to give credit where credit is due. I commend the author for making the protagonist middle aged and also not a traditional beauty because there aren't enough examples of that in this genre; However, I wish she hadn't been so whiney. Everyone in the book comments on how strong Mona is yet all she does is complain and push people away. I became so frustrated with her in fact, I almost gave up on the book but I am glad that I decided to finish it. I hope in the next book that Mona's character will improve and that the mystery will be more complex. less
