review 1: I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It offered a new look at a lot of classic myths, something that's not easy to do with the sheer amount of fantasy books out nowadays. I devoured the book in about a day, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It may not be the next Great Classic, but I'll be damned if it isn't at least considered a fun read. I mean, who doesn't love a kickass female protagonist, cool twists on mythology, and only a hint of romance?
review 2: I read this one because it was on the Lone Star List for 2013-14. The plot was fast-past and exciting and it was easy to connect to the characters. However, I spent most of the first half of the book confused about the time period. The protagonist keeps mentioning Darwin discovering preternatural creat
... moreures....it took me a while to understand the setting was alternate-modern-day, as in everything is typical present day, except for the fact that many "mythical" creatures exist. This took away from the story until, finally, in the 2nd half of the book enough detail was finally explained for me to follow. less
