review 1: Beauty and the Earl by Jess Michaels Series: The Pleasure Wars #3Author: Jess MichaelsGenre: Erotic Historical RomancePublisher: Samhain PublishingRelease Date: 4/15/2014Format: ebookSource: eARC from Author in exchange for an honest review"Scorching!" BEAUTY AND THE EARL is the third book in the Pleasure Wars Series and I loved it!  I thought it was a fitting end to the series. There is a short novella BEAUTIFUL DISTRACTION which is coming out in June, which features Violet's friend Olivia.Ridiculously Short PlotViolet Milford is hired by Liam's sister Ava to spy on him (and seduce him of course!).  She follows him to Bath where she seduces him and unwittingly falls in love with her target.  Liam is finally healed when he realizes that he loves Violet as well.  Ma... morein CharactersViolet Milford - The Courtesan hired by Ava to spy and gather information on LiamLiam, Earl of Winbury - The broken hero who has not been able to move on after the death of his love Matilda ThemesSeductionBroken HeroRedemption of the hero RecommendationsAlthough this book can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading the first book in the series Taken By the Duke to understand more about Liam's lost love and hatred towards Ava's husband. Other ThoughtsI was also intrigued by Violet’s best friend Olivia and was ecstatic when I found out that Jess would be releasing her story! (insert: I have read Beautiful Distraction and it is amazing!). Read the full review on I Heart Romance.
review 2: - First I must say that I am a huge Jess Michaels fan. Her writing has proved to be funny, engaging in storylines and have the ability to create characters we can form a connection to. Now, with that being said, I was extremely shocked that none of these qualities were found in this book. The storyline was so predictable from start to finish. I found it odd that the author was Jess M. I will point out the pros and cons below…Cons:- Too much like a Romeo and Juliet scenario to the point where the author even mentions a particular tid bit from the actual Romeo and Juliet saga (so predictable)- I didn’t like how the characters where describe or lacked thereof, it wasn’t enough about the characters to form a connection with them- The characters themselves didn’t really have a connection with themselves like Liam Windbury and Ava who are brother and sister, they didn’t spend any time together for us to form a real family relationship and their (allege) closeness even when she desperately wanted to help him…It wasn’t believable- Also, we didn’t any real look into what Liam was going through. He was locked in his room for months, who is talking care of running things, the household, the other estate business, etc. Even when Ava was kidnapped we still didn’t get a glimpse to what Liam was going through or his actions, they were blithely told to us towards the end in hear say. - The sexual scenes between Christian and Ava was just “SEX” there was no true emotional connection there, even when they both realized they loved each other I still didn’t feel the (aaawww) moment. I wasn’t convinced they were truly in love. No tugging at the heart strings.- I didn’t like that Ava as a “Lady of the ton” would degrade herself in the fashion she did, such as trading her virginity to save her brother and a debt…like some whore from St. Giles…really I couldn’t respect her as a “Lady”. Especially when she didn’t truly do it to save her brother, she wanted the Duke and has wanted him for years and she used her brother as an excuse. Then she had the nerve to get upset at her brother for basically doing the same thing to her by selling her off to a man to save her reputation and clear a debt and at THAT she decided to get some integrity. Like really… what’s the difference. - I didn’t like that when the characters talked to themselves or were thinking out loud..the author used quotation marks which was a little confusing because you wasn’t sure if they were talking to someone in the room, not up until the next sentence did you realize they were talking to themselves. Weird! - Pros: NONE sorry less
