review 1: Jess Row's ambitious novel deals with cultural appropriation, identity politics and the meanings of race in a post-structural world on the cusp of making "racial reassignment surgery" a reality. The narrator, a man ostensibly tapped to be the biographer of the first man to suffer from "racial dysmorphia" and undergo a white-to-black transformation, and who is himself dealing with his own personal demons, is both intrigued and confounded by what the result of the wide-spread practice of this procedure would be. The book doesn't function as a satire but asks some important questions about identity, about who and what we are in a century where crude seems global, suspended, costumal, rather than local, deeply rooted and real. Even though it doesn't posit definitive answers le... moreaves the reader more enlightened for the consideration of those issues. 3.5 stars.
review 2: Blurb sounded interesting: a guy who has recently lost his wife and daughter to a car accident has a chance meeting on the street with an old friend who's undergone racial reassignment surgery-- formerly white, he's now black. The friend's got a project he'd like the narrator to take on-- is he interested, and when can they start? I gave it a generous hundred pages and then skipped to the end, which was about as interesting as the first hundred pages -- which is to say, two stars. One problem: The premise piques interest but the plot can't hold it. Another: it is difficult to read page after page of dialogue without quotation marks or other method of distinguishing the speakers. less
