review 1: Though the book had a bit of a slow start, it engaged me enough to press on, and I'm so glad I did. I grew up on Victoria Holt books and the gothic genre, and Born of Persuasion was a class act rendition of those novels. I loved that the book kept me guessing for a long, long time. Was Mr. Macy actually good or truly evil? The characters had depth, especially the brothers Edward and Henry. The antagonist was well drawn, a good blending of appealing and off-putting traits. The heroine was interesting, and though at times I wished she'd stand up for herself, I understood that in the time period she likely would not have done so. There was only one line in the book that threw me as being out of period, but it was easy to forgive. I am anxious to read the rest of the series, a... morend I hope its as fulfilling.I gave the book five stars because I was vastly satisfied by language, plot twists, layering, and characterization. As to a reviewer who complained about an abrupt ending -- the ending gave enough closure to be satisfying. It's clear that the story will continue in book two, but satisfying enough if a reader chooses to stop with number one.
review 2: Wow,this was one of the most unusual books I've ever read. The plot is so intricate that at times it was hard to follow. Written in first person (which I don't care for) left me a little confused at times, thinking I missed something. And there are a lot of mean, nasty people in this story also. All that to say, it certainly kept me riveted and turning pages into the night. And you are never sure who the true villain is, and there are a lot of possibilities for that, ha! This book was a free and the reason I downloaded it. However.. now I am hooked so will be reading the next two! I must find out what happens to Julia, the poor dear. And oh, that Mr. Macy....well I'm not quite sure what to say about him. :) less

There was only about 50 pages that were good. The rest was boring pointless fluff.

Now I need to find out if Mr. Macy was just using her or was he really loved her?

Bad. Starts out well, but soon deteriorates into a ridiculous gothic.

Enjoyable story with its Myriad lose ends, mysteries, and secrets.
