review 1: This was the only book of the series available to me, so I started mid-series, but I'm so so so glad I didn't wait for the first one. While some things were confusing to me (character histories, who everyone was, the magical rules in this world), I was able to follow it after a while. This book is just plain delightful. Funny, sexy, charming, yay. Reminds me a lot of the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. Jackie is funny, sardonic, brave, witty, selfish, self-sacrificing, and relatable. Love her. And her men, Noah and Zane...? Yum. Both Alpha, both great. Love triangles are usually a tired trope, and I usually cannot stand flighty and indecisive heroines: "But who do I REALLY love? But I like them BOTH! Oh hum..." Ugh. Spare me. But Jill Myles did a great job writing ... moreit. Somehow, I didn't care much that she had both these guys on strings, that she couldn't figure out her feelings. I totally got WHY she couldn't figure out her feelings. I didn't lose patience with her at all (except to be whine, "But Zane is wayyyyyyyy hotter! Come on!"). Great writing, excellent world-building, snappy prose. Loved it. Definitely a fun time to read. (But not without substance. This isn't fluff. Also, I should mention, "succubus" books usually toe the line between RN and erotica, and while the sex was uber hot in this--thank you, Jill Myles--it's not erotica. There's a plotline outside the bedroom. Don't let the succubus stuff put you off.)Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to Kindle the rest of this series right now. (Even though I should be filling out grad school apps. Whoops?)Highly, highly recommended!
review 2: As much as I really loved this story, there were a lot of creepy moments. It was a little tough to believe that the supposed good guys were the ones who tried to inflict the most harm to Jackie. I loathed the head of the Serim council and I wasn't overly impressed with Noah throughout this story.I'm not going to ruin anything, but I was extremely annoyed with the author for pretty much ruining one of the heroes so we would accept Jackie's ultimate decision more easily. As though it makes the story better to ruin one of the characters. On top of that, we've got a lot of drama going on. If I didn't love some of these characters so much, I don't think I would have given this story five stars. The overall plot to this story was a lot darker than the previous two, though I still loved seeing the level of dedication between Jackie and her heroes.I only wish that Zane wasn't absent for so much of the story and that Noah would stop trying to sacrifice himself to save Jackie. It's like a never ending cycle for him and it gets old well before this story. less
