review 1: This would probably be more like 2 1/2 stars. I didn't totally dislike it, it was just kind of all over the place. My daughter was given this book to read for a book club, non of her friends really liked it and I can see why. It is more true to life than I think we often like to read. I like my reading to take me to another place and really let me imagination go. This book wasn't really like that. It was more real. However, I can see why it was chosen for a teenage book club because it deals with overcoming a lot of teenage insecurities and finding ourselves and building self confidence. That was the part that I liked. The rest was just ok.
review 2: I picked up this book solely because of the cover. I have spent many a summer competing and working at ... morethe county fair - although you would never catch me in the poultry area. I was more comfortable around the goats and sheep. This book charmed me from the very first line. The town, the school, the people - it all felt so much like the area in which I grew up. It's all about FFA kids. If you went to a high school where the FFA Kid was a "type," just like the "jock" or the "band geek," then you will appreciate the authors' characterizations. It was a challenge to get past the Texas twang that permeates the writing and the very vocal rooster character (although he gets bonus points because he's named Charles Dickens). less
