review 1: In my continuing quest to find feminist romantic suspense, I gave Sorenson a try. The book started off strong, with interesting characters and a nuanced approach to life in a gang-infested neighborhood, despite centering its mystery on a sexually violated woman of color. And I enjoyed the secondary romance, between the college-aged sibling/sibling-in-law of the hero & heroine. Yet the book ended up being the typical woman in danger, man comes to the rescue affair, with a hint of implicit ideology suggesting that poor Latinos need to be saved (through romance) by white love interests. I'll give another Sorenson a try, to see if all her books fall into the woman in peril/man to the rescue mode.
review 2: Officer Noah Young, patrol officer working for Chula Vista
... morePD, near Mexican border, with his partner find a body of young women. She has been raped and suffocated with plastic bag over her head. Detective Santiago wants them to assist with the case. Noah is hoping to move on and become a Homicide Detective. He goes to Club Suave were girl worked as waitress. There he interviews April Ortiz, head waitress. These two are drawn to each other from start. She gives him a tip about a gang member. April is a single mother with 5 year old daughter, Jenny, whom she is very protective off. Jenny father Raul is in prison. Eric Hernandex, Raul younger brother, works in a grocery store, but also sells drugs. Meghan, Noah younger sister comes to stay with him. She not happy with college she going too. She gets job in same store as Eric. At a bonfire he saves her from being sexually assaulted. These two get together, Noah not happy about this. Another body of young girl is found. She worked with both Eric and Meghan. Eric gets into trouble with cops, he asks Noah to give him a chance. He can get information about Homicide from 10 years previous. Eric wants to change his life and get away from the gang he is involved with. He comes across as a very caring young guy, who loves and takes care of his grand mother and adores his niece Jenny. You want to see him succeed and get his HEA.This book was very good in the romance, as they was two stories. It let me down in the investigation part as they was very little of it. I will say this, it has a bitter sweet ending, I am hoping for a second book with some of the same characters. Will not give away their names. less
