review 1: This book was provided through a Goodreads Giveaway. Actual rating: 3.5 stars.Although the story reminded me of 'wither', 'delirium' and some other stories, I really liked it. It's a good dystopian, somewhat cliché, but it was thrilling and it kept me interested until the very end. The characters had a lot of depth and the writing makes the story easy to understand. What I didn't like was that scenes that should've been romantic, weren't romantic at all. It didn't involve a lot of intimacy and a kiss was just a flat 'kiss'. The word prude pops into my head. Don't know if I'm the only one. I see other reviews of people who found this book too sexual! Maybe I just read an entire different book, because I couldn't find the explicit content.Looking forward to reading the next... more book, outcasts.I was always taught not to judge a book by it's cover, but I think this one's really really bad :$
review 2: This is a different kind of dystopian. In a future America, people live in small, scattered communities. Most, it would seem, returning to simpler life. All except those living in the "Safe Lands," where, ironically, they are the least safe, all having been afflicted with the "thin plague." Since the Safe Landers can't reproduce, they kidnap the outsiders and make 'em have their babies. Nice plan. Naturally, the conflict is instantaneous. Oddly enough, women don't like being forced to produce one child after another. Jill Williamson has some fun characters and intriguing plot in her futuristic society, with many similarities to our own. A very clean read and one I'd gladly allow my early teen kids to read (if I still had early teens). less
