review 1: A lovely store that celebrates family and heirlooms that are precious because of their stories, not their materials. Aylesworth uses repetition and rhyme in homage to the Yiddish folktale, "I Had a Little Overcoat." The realistic illustrations depict a family from the early days of the last century (water from a well) through a 60's wedding (newlyweds leave in a VW Beetle). The story has a bit of a twist in the end that is a sweet treat.
review 2: With its roots in a Yiddish folk song, this lively immigration story tells about how the narrator's grandfather, a talented tailor, sewed himself a coat for his wedding day. Eventually he wears the coat out, and he fashions it into a jacket, a vest, a tie, and a toy. I love the ending and how the text uses some of the
... more same words as the garment is reduced each time as well as the recycling theme that runs through the story. Showing how the family members age over time, the illustrations, created with waterproof ink and watercolors, make the book visually appealing and perfect for sharing with readers' own family members and perhaps establishing a family tradition of their own. It would be fun to pair this one with Simms Taback's Joseph Had a Little Overcoat to compare the two versions of similar stories. less
