review 1: It should actually be a criminal offense that this was never made into a film. People should be in prison. For real. Only the fact that it is a beautiful, deeply moving addition to the graphic novel scene makes up for that. With echoes of "The Dark Tower" and the incredible world's Jim Henson created with "The Dark Crystal" and "Labyrinth" lingering throughout this beautiful, mad tale of adventure uses barely any text to spin a classic tale of good versus evil as only Henson could tell it. Not. To. Be. Missed.
review 2: I love this, but I can understand why Henson's "lost" screenplay never made it to film. Assuming that Perez's gorgeous artwork (the longer you stare at a page, the more you'll see happening in the backgrounds) is a faithful portrayal of the word
... mores of Henson and Juhl, any studio would naturally have balked at trying to create this visually, especially with the limitation of 1960s-70s practical effects.A number of reviewers are grousing that the book doesn't make sense or lacks a plot. Although it is a surrealist work, it does not lack a plot. Henson and Juhl were attempting to visually portray the manic creative process of an artist, as he is constantly being sidelined by different ideas, distractions and hindrances. Even if the artist reaches the finish line and his work is celebrated, he finds himself back at the beginning, forced to push onward to a new project, with all the same potentials for failure. This makes the story a perfect autobiography for Henson himself. I can't imagine this actually being put on film, but as a graphic novel, it's glorious. less
