review 1: A powerful book, but very low on my list of Thompson's books. READ "THE GRIFTERS" OR "THE GETAWAY" if you want to catch one of his more enjoyable. This book induces skin-crawling needle penetrating full body MISERY throughout. Frank Dillon a door-to-door Salesman and Housewife's "friend" representing Pay-E-Zee Sales has been beat by life such that nothing seems below him. I haven't followed many others that impressed me less: American Psycho, maybe or the alcoholic degenerate in Malcolm Lowry's Under The Volcano. If you found De Sade's Justine to be a good frolic, well maybe this book is for you. Every Miserable person I have ever known places the blame on the world at large, but never take responsibility for their own actions. That's what makes Thompson's writing rin... moreg true. He's a Hell of a Writer- but this book is nothing but misery, guilt, and self-destruction. Not worth the time! If you want to be disgusted by a Flim-Flam Man read Nick Cave's THE DEATH OF BUNNY MONROE. Good old Bunny at least ENJOYED every disgusting moment of his worthless life. I'm going to search for a Tom Robbins novel I may not have read, after Hell Of A Woman, I need to read some humor.
review 2: This book has the feel of a routine caper until the very end. The ending seems abrupt and tacked-on, but I find it fascinating because it really lays out what I like about this writer. He is the king of the unreliable narrator. The thoughts and narration of the dishonest protagonist are not to be trusted. The story ends with two separate depictions of the downfall of the main character. It is unclear whether he is drugged and then castrated or whether he gets coked-up and commits a castration suicide. It's a bit misogynistic in the depiction of women, so it is probably not for everyone. less
