review 1: Deadman Wonderland is a series that is so bloody and violent that it makes you wonder how in the world you have learned the lesson of never leave your friends. It's hard to read in the sense that it makes the reader uncomfortable with what happens to some of the characters. For example, I've had to put the book down multiple times when limbs start flying off. This series ruins childhoods with how innocent it seems with the nursery rhyme about the woodpecker but once it's repeated enough, the reader will realize that it is dark and bitter. The story is unique and unlike other manga plots. Many manga tend to have a girl main character falling in love with a popular or different high school boy while Deadman Wonderland has a student in middle school going to prison and fighti... moreng for his life in hopes of avenging his dead friends. Even though many scenes and the language make me quiet uncomfortable, I find it to convey a powerful message about standing up even after being knocked down for your friends.
review 2: Off to a fantastic start. This is creepy, unsettling, horrific Japanese dystopia at its finest. Add in a paranormal element and everything you could want is here. Deadman Wonderland is a most unique world; an amusement park built on top of a privatized prison, the park is run by the inmates and the death row inmates are especially heinously controlled and made to participate is events (games) which result in life or death. A little like "Hunger Games" only more violent. While futuristic and dystopian the story easily crosses over into horror. Numerous cast members are introduced in this first volume but the focus is on the main two characters, Ganta wrongfully imprisoned on death row for a massacre he did not commit and Shiro, a strange girl with white hair who befriends him. Awesome new series! I love this kind of stuff! less
