review 1: After several friends of mine recommended this to me, people who have quite similar tastes to mine, I decided to give it a go and read it. Needless to say that expectations were high. Well, not anymore, I don't even think I'll even give a try to the other volumes. While this first volume has quite a few cliffhangers, I guess they just don't appeal that much to me. First of all I don't think this is very consistent, I mean, this is all-over the place. And while I realize this is not supposed to be a realistic scenario, there's a difference between edgy, fun, fast-pace and downright chaotic. Other than that this theme is a twist on a theme that has been done to death; fight for survival, superpowers and devices, survival of the fittest... yeah, I've seen it all. Unlike other... more mangas I've read with similar topics, I don't think the character development is all that great on this one. It's fast paced and the description of the characters lives and personalities falls short, making them easy to forget. More focus is put on the artwork which I think is really good. I wish the authors had chosen to build the sense of dread, the suspense, rather than just keeping it gory and super fast-paced with some hints of humour.
review 2: Wow. I really really love this manga. The anime really stayed true to the manga it seems. Ganta is such a strong willed character and he really cares abouy his friends. Even the ones he doesn't seem to remember (Shiro) and the ones who don't really want to be friends (Yoh). Speaking of Shiro, this volume wasn't clear about the history between her and Ganta. The anime wasn't clear at all either. I hope in the upcoming volumes, more is revealed about Ganta and Shiro's past. less
