The Shadow Keepers
review 1: I really loved the first book of this series, "When Blood Calls." I really liked this one. So no real love here, but it is a good book in a good series. The two main characters, Lissa and Rand, are both appealing and well-written -- especially as a duo. There was plenty of chemistry, to keep things lively, and complexity, to keep things interesting. The story was also nicely paced from cover to cover, and I never grew bored. Best of all, just enough attention was given to the "supporting" characters, building anticipation for the next and future books of this series. I have to say, I've always liked this author's work when writing as Julie Kenner, but this new series is easily better -- better characters, better writing, better stories. I hope this series goes... more far.
review 2: In the second book of the Shadow Keepers series we follow succubus Lissa and weren Rand. It's hard to really pinpoint what the plot was and explain it because there were so many different plot threads going on in this book. There were a lot of characters and it seemed like every single one of them had their own side plots. Lissa and Rand didn't even share the same plot. They each had problems of their own that just happened to intersect. I guess I will say the main plot thread was somebody trying to frame Gunnolf for dead human bodies that keep popping up around L.A. and its Rand's job to find out who the real culprit is. Despite the fact that all of the sub-characters have their own plot threads and that can get confusing, I kind of like that even the non-main characters have personalities and backstories. It gives them a lot of depth and it was nice to have them in the story. Lissa and Rand's characters were done well, in my opinion. This was a insta-love book but it didn't feel like it was. They actually held strong and didn't just jump into bed with each other. Unfortunately I felt like their relationship didn't grow at all. The build up of their romance kind of fell flat. Overall it was a decent read and I will be continuing the series. I did notice however that this is not one of those books that you can pick up in the middle of a series and still have it make sense. You should probably read the first one. less
