review 1: I find I have mixed feelings bout this book; don't get me wrong, I liked it quite a bit, but I may actually need some time to process it. This story revolves around Paul, an Englishman who had been working in Iceland when a tragic accident killed his lover, Sven, and left him without any memories of the last year. The vast majority of the book revolves around Paul trying to regain his lost memories so he can get his life back on track and figure out what really happened. Along the way, Paul meets Viggo, a man that he has vague recollections of...and an undeniable attraction to. There's also Alex, an American over for a summer holiday, and Mags, a co-worker and close friend to Paul. The entire time I was reading this book, I felt frustrated, much like Paul was feeling,... more by the lack of knowledge; I just wanted to know what happened, desperately wanted to know, but I was stuck learning about the last year just as Paul did, in bits and pieces as his memories flitted closer and then back out of reach. By the time I actually got to find out what really happened to Paul and Sven, I was wobbling back and forth with various theories ranging from a huge conspiracy between everyone but Paul's sister, Gretchen, and some paranormal element involving actual ancient Vikings. The reality of what happened was both shocking to me and completely appropriate; I loved it and I was so pleased that it caught my by surprise. If I hadn't been a fan of JL Merrow before, this story would have made me one.
review 2: so I already new that J.L. Merrow was an auto-buy for me, but this just cements it. this is her first "serious" book i've read and it was just as good as the snarky, funny ones. though even her funny books are far more nuanced and thoughtful than the majority of "serious topic" mm. the mystery of Paul's lost memories kept the story trotting along at a nice speed. The writing was very atmospheric and helped give me that icelandic feeling (disclaimer - never been there) that you get listening to sigur ros or some bjork. the content all seemed to be well researched re the country but also the Egil Skallagrimsson storyline. as a postgrad student i also enjoy reading about academics as mc (especially when they tend to get as side-tracked as me). less
