Heaven and Hell trilogy
review 1: Such a strange, beautiful book. Halldór Laxness meets Dylan Thomas via fairy tale. A hymn to the constantly shifting scale of heavenly and hellish experience immanent to the expanse of human life. Its rhythms match those of the Icelandic landscapes, which are inseparable from the characters who inhabit them. The narrative voice, which is that of a ghostly chorus who can achieve neither resurrection nor ultimate death, produces a perspective which is bound neither by consciousness nor time, what was nor what is. The book as a whole reads like a sad, hopeful eulogy to longing: for the dead, for the living and for those we want to possess us. The first hundred pages is as close to literary perfection as you are likely to find, and its reflections on the simultaneous power an... mored impotence of language are incredible.

Ten years ago I would've enjoyed the combo: poetical writing with no story much more.
