review 1: A Review of Chance Lost (Change Series) By Jo LaRueReviewed by Wennie Conedy4 out of 5 starsDisclaimer: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Chance Lost (Book 1) is a paranormal romance that centers around shape-shifters, Gods, and demigods. Jo offers an intriguing premise that demigods, immortals, and shape shifters walk the earth among mortals. They eat, act, walk and talk like humans, but they certainly don’t look like any typical humans. Throw in a god like Zeus or Lachesis (one of the Fates) and you have the formula for something extra special. Sylas is a demigod and immortal, one who was specifically created to keep the existence of immortals a secret and to stop them from killing humans. To help him with this quest, he was given the ability to sh... moreift to any shape an immortal may take. He may appear as a dog or an eagle. To provide him company, Zeus and Lachesis also created his mate, one that is destined to be his partner and equal. The downside? He has been searching and waiting for her for the past 500 years, and he is getting quite anxious. Enter Chance. She of the long hair, the four level black belt skills and one messed up past. She encounters a group of rogue shifters whose leader becomes obsessed with her after she embarrasses him in front of his pack. Her life is in danger, and Sylas vows to protect her above all else from them. For who knows? She may just be his mate. I have read paranormal romances before but have veered away from the shape-shifter genre. I must say that I was impressed with this one. Jo LaRue has cleverly interspersed this story with human interactions, old magic and beliefs making this a more believable story. I loved the friendship between Sylas and Jack and their bond and protection of Chance, who is so fiercely independent that they are left in awe of her strength and her fortitude. She has, more than one occasion, proven that she is their equal and can take care of herself as well as they can. The pacing of the story is consistent, with strong characters and believable situations. One thing I thought was a little out of synch was that the story was set in current time, with references to green technology and living off the grid. The characters were drawn to be modern, Harley-riding, strong, rich individuals, yet the sentence structure of the conversations was formal. I felt a bit of inconsistency there, but it certainly did not detract from the telling of the story. So if you are looking for a different type of romance with strong lead characters and the promise of good series, I encourage you to pick this book. It’s well worth the read. I look forward book 2 to find out what’s next for Sylas and Chance.
review 2: As of late, I have been reading predominantly contemporary romance/erotica, so when I received an ARC for “Chance Lost,” which is an urban fantasy – it was definitely a nice and refreshing change! This story revolves around Chance Cadens who mysteriously wins the lottery and decides to give up her current life and live off the grid. Chance is a BAD ASS chick – Independent, self-sufficient, has a hard exterior, but broken and vulnerable deep down inside. Chance has gone through an extremely traumatic childhood and has a damaged soul, which has caused her to distrust everyone around her – especially men.“She was self-sufficient, self-assured, and unafraid. There was a hint at some kind of great sorrow in her life.”Chance is an extremely tough cookie and has undergone martial arts training and can kick serious ass – she’s been known to hustle people; however, her life is turned up side down when she decides to hustle the wrong person. Her actions causes a bar fight and luckily for her, Sylas Taiken and bar owner Jack assists her in escaping the dangerous situation she suddenly found herself in. What appeared to be on the surface, just a regular bar fight, has actually opened up a can of worms for Chance and now her life was in danger.Chance and Sylas have an immediate attraction to one another and after surviving such a terrifying situation and with Sylas having full knowledge that Chance didn’t just piss off and humiliate a “regular” biker guy, he knows that he has to do everything in his power to protect Chance, as her life depended on it.Albeit an “insta-love” situation between Chance and Sylas (which I tend to dislike), I LOVED the intense chemistry between them and as the story progressed, I fully accepted and understood why they shared this undeniable chemistry and need for one another.Throughout the book, you see the struggle with Chance trying to let Sylas in and I was thoroughly impressed with Sylas’ patience with her. He was understanding and was satisfied just being in her presence. He knew in his heart that this was his soul mate, but he had an enormous secret that he could not quite tell her and wasn’t sure If she would accept. With threats and uncertainty constantly lurking at every corner, could their new found love survive the danger and secrets?“But I don’t feel like I’m wasting time Chance, not since I met you. I’ve laughed more with you in these last two days than I have in years. You continue to delight and surprise me. I hope you’ll giave us both more time to learn more about each other. There is no rush and no demands from me. Will you allow me to spend more time with you?” – SylasI thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Chance and Sylas. It’s not often you hear about a kick-ass heroine who can hold her own amongst the boys, so it was definitely a breath of fresh air! Sylas is so damn loving and sweet – his devotion to Chance is to die for!!Not to give too much away, Sylas ultimately reveals his secret to Chance and she discovers that changes will soon be taking place within her, which is irreversible. Initially, this upset me, as she was not given a choice regarding the situation, BUT I reluctantly ended up coming around given the circumstance and the position they were in and the urgency of the situation. It just surprised me a little that it didn’t really seem to bother Chance given her stubbornness and aversion to have anything forced upon her. BUT, honestly, if I had a mate like Sylas, I’d be whatever you wanted me to be. LOL = )Great job to Jo La Rue for a fantastic debut novel! I LOVED the plot, character development and how the story flowed with ease. I truly felt emotionally vested in the story and learning more about what’s next for Chance and Sylas. I can’t wait for the next book!!I highly recommend this book! Jo LaRue is a great contender amongst the likes of Stephanie Meyer and Charlaine Harris! less
