review 1: This was for my mystery book club… #16 in the Arly Hanks series by Joan Hess. This book was confusing in a lot of ways, the biggest being the shifting points of view of the various characters. Arly Hanks's point of view was told from the first person, and it took me until about Chapter 3 to realize this main character was female. There were a lot of hillbilly references and dialogue, and it went from Christian / church loving in one sentence, to profanity and sex in the next, there just wasn't a lot of consistency. It was a rough book to get through, but I managed to finish for discussion purposes at book club; otherwise I probably would have given up during the first chapter...
review 2: As I write this, we are having a heatwave in my area. My plan to ge
... moret through the worst of it was to go to the library and find murder mysteries light enough to entertain me, but well written enough that I wouldn't feel insulted while reading. This series fits that profile perfectly. I do NOT read it for fully realized characters, realistic settings, or complex human drama. It has none of those things. This book is silly, in a very good way. Characters and situations are exaggerated, names are laugh out loud funny. I have read most of the books in the series and am always entertained, and that's what I'm looking for from them. less
