review 1: I'm generally not a science fiction fan, but this book pulled me in for various reasons. First, the author is a biology professor at Kenyon, and the setting for the book is, in many ways, very similar to Gambier -- even though it takes place in space. Some of the characters seem quite familiar too -- one of the key characters even speaks in the easily recognizable parlance of a previous Kenyon president. Second, the story is driven as much by its characters' emotions as by the ideas of a futuristic society. An engaging read, especially for those who have links to rural liberal arts colleges.

But interesting and worth reading especially if the idea of a 'sci-fi college story' appeals to you. less

A lot of fun. A terrible world to live in, but a college anyone would have loved to go to.
