review 1: I really enjoyed this book. Although I am several years older than the characters, I also went to Oberlin College and lived in NYC in the 90's (early 90's). This book really captured the vibe of the time, but I just missed the whole Williamsburg, beginning of IT, 9/11 scenarios in the book. My peers were also in the arts like the people in this book, so their struggles rang very true. There is a wanna-be actress, a musician with a rock band, a writer, someone in publishing, and some political activists. The structure of the book echoes McCarthy's "The Group" and unlike one reviewer, I like that it skips ahead and tells each characters story at a different point in time. I loved the Group and really feel this novel is an appropriate homage, as it's character were mode... morern and forward looking but also struggled with what it meant to be a woman in their specific time.
review 2: I heard about this when I was reading reviews of "The Romantics," which I read a few weeks ago and hated. One reviewer said that this book was a similar premise of "The Romantics," except much better, and she was right. This was really well-written and I found myself absorbed in the characters' lives. It did drag at parts, and I thought it could use a bit more editing, but overall, it was a good read. less

This book was a little cliched but very enjoyable. The characters were well written and believable.

Finally, it's over. I should've just given up but kept hoping it would get better.
