review 1: This book was lent to me by a friend when I found myself in a lurch without a book, and it was a quick and easy read to enjoy while I got my summer tanning on.But I did have some issues with the book, one of them being the giants being metaphorical. I was kinda really hoping everyone would be shocked when this mentally ill child turned out to be an actual giant killer. Now there are some moments where you’re not entirely sure that she didn’t really fight a giant (the hammer crashing and tearing into her porch when she drops it the floor, or her best friend continuing to refer to her fighting a giant even after everyone else acknowledges she just got sucked into a tornado) , but there are other ways to explains those things. And as another reviewer said, I was expectin... moreg something so much worse to be Barbara’s source of trauma than her mother dying of cancer. Not to say losing your mother as a child isn’t traumatic, but I thought Barbara was having active open eye hallucinations and was definitely delusional (if she ended up not really killing giants, of course). That kind of behavior usually needs to a bigger catalyst. In the end she seemed to be more misunderstood and angsty than truly damaged, despite the buildup leading us to think otherwise. And then to make the ending so neatly wrapped up, to make her so accepting of her mothers death- the ooey gooey "we're stronger than we think we are"- just don't. As a reader I'm better than that, but then YA fiction usually has no choice but to cop out, so I can't get too mad. The artwork, as others have said, could be problematic. I didn’t mind the black and white, or the overall simplistic style, but sometimes it was literally hard to tell what was happening because of drawing style. While the giant was the most visually impressive part of the story, there were panels where I couldn’t make heads or tales of the most intense parts of the fight scene, and just assumed Barbara was kicking ass or struggling depending on the context clues. My final problem with the book was put perfectly by Robyn: stop making kids talk like House. We all know why it’s entertaining, but it’s so over done and completely unbelievable.
review 2: The story is made by the final issue - without that this story is far inferior, to a greater extent than most books would be without their final chapter. Most of the book is a build up to that final issue. We learn about the protagonist and her personality and life (although cryptically - nothing is fully revealed until the end - although I'm sure you could guess with a close enough reading). I thought the portrayal of the young girl was very genuine - not realistic (there were a few things that I couldn't quite buy), but close enough and all the 'unrealistic' stuff added to the story. The book is mostly in reality. There are a few fantastical portions that I think are just part of the protagonist's imagination. less

Estaba por ponerle 3.5 o 4 estrellas a este cómic. Pero el final me gustó tanto que me hizo ponerle 5. Me dejó un buen sabor de boca, no sé. Me agradó.

I'd recommend this as a good choice for younger readers, having an interesting protagonist in Barbara and a theme of dealing with life's difficulties that might be helpful and even inspiring. My main takeaway from the book would be the engagingly sketchy artwork, which belies the enormous thoughtfulness and hard work that clearly went into its making. On a geekier note, the covers sport perhaps the cleverest use of spot gloss varnish printing I've ever seen-- but of course that's impossible to discern from a JPEG. You'll just have to get your hands on a copy!
