review 1: I enjoyed Dead City so much for its fast pace and non-stop zombie action. When i saw this book, I knew the good times would continue on from the first book - I was so wrong.I read so many negative reviews of Dead City (even though I loved it) the main complaint was that it was too fast paced and never slowed down to build the characters or give you a breather. Maybe the author read that too and decided to write this book with the pace so slow that a zombie could outrun it.I always give a book 100 pages to prove itself, this one failed miserably. Dead City set a standard and this book put me to sleep and I couldn't even give it 100 pages. I mean come on its the zombie apocalypse. Anyone reading a zombies novel wants to see people running for their lives, fighting to survive... more and people being eaten by the undead, not the dramatic relationships and psychological struggles of the survivors.
review 2: Blame my low rating on a recent zombie spree. I finally got sucked into zombie fiction and have perused everything from books to podcasts. My point is that I got used to a certain pace, and these may have tainted my objectivity. Here's what would have made this book stronger for me: Don't introduce so many characters. Let me get really acquainted to the ones who are essential, and spend more time making them three-dimensional. Introduce your characters early on rather than dropping them several chapters after the story has taken off. Give me a little more suspense. The heart pounding is minimized when I'm looking at the story from so many shifting viewpoints. I can accept there are zombies who look so normal as to not see for them for who they are until they are literally on top of you, but there are certain conventions about zombies that make them zombies. No, that doesn't mean stick to someone else's idea of what a zombie can or cannot do, but stick to enough conventions to make the monsters "believable."While I would not personally recommend this book, I would recommend going back and reading the prequel, which I am told is not necessary, but I think I may personally appreciate this book a little more. I may come back and give it another chance. less
