review 1: I didn't realise there was a backwoods part of Texas; it's in the East and the only good thing about it seems to be leaving it behind. The poverty and violence is depressing but the three young characters seeking to escape earn our sympathy and our admiration with their resourcefulness and their courage. I read it in one go and thoroughly enjoyed it; the suspense of whether they could possibly succeed kept one glued to the book.

The tension ratchets up when it needs to, and settles for contemplation when I was practically out of breath. My only gripe with the book was a beginning that took me quite a few chapters to completely immerse myself in, but once the adventure kicks off in earnest I had a hard time putting this one down. less
