review 1: This Scotiabank Giller Prize book is a bit slow at first detailing the break up of the family unit. But the eventually we learn the somewhat predictable parts and eventually the horrific details come to light of why a Vietnam veteran may have escaped to Canada legally instead of being a draft dodger lie so many he knew way back when. Honest and raw, somewhat based on true incidents. A good read indeed.
review 2: This book wasn't as execrable as a majority of reviews here led me to believe. While the prose tended to wind, it is possible to see that as a stylistic affect. And so on, but I don't want to defend the novel. It won the Scotiabank Giller prize, which not many seem to agree with. Some editing could have helped, sure, but remember that this was a bit o... moref a hesitant winner whose publisher couldn't keep up with demand. This book wasn't written to steal the Giller from more deserving artists (and the Giller, anyway, has to pretend to care about young writers every now and then - maybe it was one of those years).I had to read it quickly because it will be someone's gift in less than 24 hours, so I might've missed some key moment that resonates deeply with the plot and brings the whole thing together. I've read other prize winners that were at least as ponderous and meandering as this. However, I don't think the book is truly awful enough to warrant a low rating on any basis other than spite. Ultimately, I found it to be an unremarkable book, and it is mildly funny that people were so worked up about it. I suppose Canadian literature is not dead, that it is guarded night and day from both its own foolishness and a wider readership by its own behavior, if not its content. less
