review 1: Convoluted sentence structure took a bit of getting in to but I settled with it quite happily after a short while. Some incredible passages of prose that really describe things that us non-authors are unable to put into words. Those bits blew me away. The general mood and atmosphere was pregnant with the possibility of a discovery that oddly never happened. So while much of it I loved, I was left feeling a bit baffled.
review 2: A wonderfully written true-feeling story about a daughter trying to understand her father, who she had never realized was marked by his experiences as a Marine in Vietnam. This tale of love, loss and the myriad effects of memory will stay with me. There is a sunken town in Ontario, a Vietnam comrade whose life and loss is only hinted at
... more and more than anything there is the realization that someone can never really understand another person even when trying hard and even when the person is your father. Life is never fully explained to those living it or to those studying someone else's. It is the mystery of it all that mesmerizes us, I guess. less

It was saved by the second half of the book. Otherwise would have given it a 2 rating.
