review 1: I will come back to this for the recipe on pan-fried grouper alone. A big handsome cookbook with lots of good talking, photos, and recipes, my favorite kind of cookbook. Unfortunately it is nearly New Year's Eve and the last thing I need to look at is a book of enticing recipes. Now is the time to be strong-minded and diet-aware. Besh's cookbook, I will find you again in summer, hopefully thinner and ready for some Lousiana style fried chicken :)
review 2: There were lots of recipes that I wanted to try right away. Aside from the roasts, most of the recipes did not take that much time, didn't have too many ingredients, and were not difficult to make. I always appreciate pictures of the food in cookbooks so I know what I'm making and what it's supposed to
... morelook like. The photos of the children in the book make the book seem homey, inviting and very personal.I needed size of dishes/pans for certain recipes. The blueberry cobbler calls for a "small dish". I used a loaf pan and it overflowed and set off the smoke alarm. Also, estimates for prep/cook time would have been helpful when attempting to cook with hungry children/husband.There is no doubt that this book involves "real" food that isn't from a can or a box, but it's not necessarily healthy or light food. The mashed potato recipe had 3 pounds potato to 1 pound butter...Overall, a lot of the recipes were practical. The dessert recipes are simple enough to make with my kids without losing my mind. The results from one recipe can be used as ingredients in other dishes. You can reuse the roasted cauliflower from one recipe and "hide" it in the mac and cheese for the next recipe. The large roasted chuck roast leftovers can go in the pasta bake. I also like how some recipes (like the meat ragout, pasta bake, etc.) allow for whatever kind of meat you have around. The pasta bake had "bake ahead" and "prepare ahead of time" options. This is not a book of recipes for what I would consider fancy or gourmet food, but it is good tasting regular food. less
