review 1: brilliant. The tension grows throughout the book, i was gripped and dreading what was going to be revealed, every page. Not once did i lose concentration, it was so real and the characters seemed to be sitting at a cafe next to me! Even though it is hard to recognise quite such a degree of horror at being gay in today's society, it makes it even more shocking that this was probably on a par with cowardice a century ago. People did disown their children more than happens today ... and the tragedy of this young person's life was at times quite overwhelming. Read it on 100th anniversary of WW1, and finished it on Armistice Sunday - it is still with me. Just as powerful as Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Recommend it to anyone.
review 2: I don't know what I was ex
... morepecting but it wasn't this although this could be because I didn't understand what the title meant. I kept meaning to look it up but I didn't. Basically two men, are sent to train and fight in the war and they grow very close although one continually denies it. later when Tristan won't back him up, Will decides enough is enough and becomes an absolutist and is later shot for being a coward. less

Too predictable, and not enough character development. I didn't care about anyone!
