review 1: John Brandon just kills me dead. I wonder if i'm maybe just a complete mark for his brand of fiction - a precise, minimal style paired with wounded, wondering characters. All the characters in the three of his books I've read (there is apparently a new fourth one) seem to always be between gears, half evil and half holy, and sliding in both directions. CITRUS COUNTY has a couple hollow spots, but the untidy contradictions of Toby and Shelby and the Toby-Shelby romance kept me rapt. And Mr Hibma might be my favorite bad teacher in the history of literature. I admit I am a fanboy; I can definitely understand how this writing might clank for some people. But man oh man does it get me bad. I think A MILLION HEAVENS is a slightly better book overall, but this was a much more co... morensuming and compelling read.
review 2: A stylistic triumph, of sorts: Brandon uses flat, affectless prose to describe his flat, affectless characters living flat, affectless lives in Citrus County, Florida. It's somewhat like a teenage "L'etranger," in that characters do vile and despicable things in a futile effort to remind themselves they're alive, that they matter; but "Citrus County" makes "L'etranger" seem comparatively hopeful and less affected somehow. I didn't enjoy reading this book, but I can respect it. less

Would have made a very good short story, but its attenuation lessened it. It's okay.
