review 1: I loved the voice established by the author. Throughout, the protagonist speaks to the reader. (Assumed to be a non-Thai, a farang, establishing reader as outsider and voyeur to Thai matters both spiritual and material.) The cultural observations and insights are fascinating, the writing is sometimes very funny. I paraphrase: "even in the most elegant of modern buildings the parking garage seems to have been designed by Stalin." I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
review 2: Det. Sonchai of the Thai police is quite a different character this time. He's lacking confidence due to the death of his son and his wife leaving for a monastery. The death of a fat farang has him and his dept. baffled for a time and he has been forced into being a middle man for his bosse
... mores heroin importation. Sonchai is half-farang so his dept. and people look at him quite differently as he cruises through Bangkok. He is funny at times but I'd rather see him back in the saddle as he used to be. His descriptions of the city and its nite life are spot on. less

Good, but not so good as the previous ones in the series. Always an enjoyable read, however...

Hated this book. Loved the first one in the series but the rest have not been worth my time!

Almost didn't finish this, but put it aside and went back to it, and it became better.

Burdett's books are an entertaining way to learn about Buddism and Thai Culture.
