review 1: Nice young adult book set in the rural south following the Civil War. It has steampunk elements (for those who liked Scott Westerfield's Leviathan) but the real focus of the book is magic. Not Harry Potter magic, but the magic of old Appalachian folktales and southern superstition. Nice read for teen boys or girls (good strong characters of both genders). No sex, no gore, but good intrigue and action.
review 2: Perhaps 4.5. Very well written book whose subject I see best-suited for a teen but who's style and complexity would leave it open for younger readers as well- thus the library cataloging it in both YA and Juvenile, I am sure. :-) As another reviewer put it, this book is American folklore smashed enthusiastically with Clockpunk Fantasy. At its heart,
... more it's a story of youths with rough beginnings who work hard to make it in the world and do some good for themselves and others. Kudos to the author for his obvious breath and interest in those real Americana legends that he spins quite enjoyably in a new direction. less

Good first book and Isabel will probably read the next two, but I am not compelled to do so.
