review 1: WHAT COMES NEXT. (2012). John Katzenbach. **.There’s a good reason I tend to avoid best-selling ‘thriller’ novels. They try to reach further and further into the blackest depths of the human psyche to find ways to describe their latest villain. In this novel, we meet a college professor who has just been told that he has Lewy body dementia. This is a rare form of dementia that doesn’t respond to many known drugs and which leads, inexorably, to both short term and long-term memory loss. While walking along the street, he sees a young girl walking along. A panel truck pulls up, and the next time he looks the girl has disappeared. He manages to get the first few letters of the license plate and finds the girl’s cap. He writes down the letters he saw, just ... moreso he can’t forget them. When he gets home, he calls the police to see if a girl has been reported missing. Not yet. The girl has been taken by a couple who will use her as the next subject in a sadistic film available for live viewing to subscribers around the world. The torture and abuse she will be put through will act as an aphrodisiac to these viewers who will act out their won fantasies during the performance. This is all broadcast over the internet using a link to whatcomesnext.com. A young female police officer is ultimately put on the case and is aghast at what she finds. The bad guys here explore the depths of depravity in an effort to make money from the sick rich, and we readers get to watch. I stopped watching.
review 2: I've read Katzenbach's books since I was pretty young, this being said I read this book years ago, maybe when it was released.I liked it and I think it was my first book regarding of a victim of a sexual crime. After years of reading other books with more or so the same theme but darker/grittier/more explicit I'm afraid I can't read the book again to actualise my rating, so I'm going to stuck with 5 stars. less

A little on the dark and twisted side for my normal reading. It was OK though.
