review 1: Langan is frequently placed under the banner of weird fiction but that seems a somewhat narrow view of his work. Between this collection and his previous one, Langan seems most intent on experimenting with all of horror's subgenres, be it weird fiction, the ghost story, classic monster stories, or tales of demonic possession. It is the last story that stands out most prominently in this collection, "Mother of Stone" is a gripping, fantastically terrifying play on the exorcist story blending in elements of mythology and the classic ghost story as well.
review 2: I wanted to like this more but the fact that Langan consciously decided to revisit common monster tropes like zombies, werewolves and vampires kind of turned me off. Two of my favorite stories in the co
... morellection, "Technicolor" and "Mother of Stone", strayed from this convention and were much better for it. TWCSOM is definitely worth a read but I hope that in the future the author strays off the beaten path a bit more. less
